I worked as a photojournalist for almost 50 years. I have been an amateur photographer, a freelance photographer, a staff photographer, an unemployed photographer (more than once), a photo editor, and the Chief Photographer at a daily newspaper.
Now I’m a retired photographer, which means I get to photograph whatever I like. I still take select assignments, and I sell some stock photos. I live in a big blue house in a small rural community south of Chicago with my wife who has put up with this photographic obsession for more than fifty years. The photographs on this site are for me. Shooting them keeps me centered. They are what I like. In case you couldn't tell, I like large photographs whether they're displayed on a printed page, or on a screen. Whether they're black and white or color, street photography or unsharp Holga photos, they should be BIG. I'm not fond of all the pomposity that goes with photography or art, or photography as art.
When asked to speak to his art before an exhibit of his work, Elliott Erwitt, one of my favorite photographers, allegedly told the critic who asked, "Look at the snaps." That pretty much sums up my feelings.
You can see more of my work on Instagram where I'm mikevphoto53. I also post on Substack every week or so. You won't see me being a pompous ass there either.
